PAL (Police Activities League) aims to be friendly, safe haven for children After school - The Police Activities League provides youth with arts, sports and role models Thursday, January 04, 2007 By Candy Puterbaugh ... Teachers say PAL students improve in class and speak up more, according to executive director Cioeta. "Kids can work in a relaxed, fun and unpressured setting," said Michelle Koberstein, an instructional assistant at Molalla Elementary School. "Teachers see definite improvements in reading and homework, which boosts confidence. Plus kids have someone to confide in." Sgt. Paul Wandell of the Beaverton Police Department sees PAL as a deterrent to crime, giving youth a place to go with endless opportunities to learn new things and hone school skills. "It provides positive peer pressure," he said. "It's not a flashy organization and doesn't get much media attention, but it's there, day in and day out."

Molalla Pioneer.com Molalla High School football hosting barbecue and scrimmage Aug. 28 By: Pioneer Staff Published: 8/28/2009 2:18:49 PM Last Updated: 8/28/2009 2:21:12 PM By Danielle Trank for the Molalla Pioneer The Molalla High School football team is kicking off the season with their second annual scrimmage and barbecue this Friday, Aug. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at Heckard Field, their home turf. Admission is $5 for the scrimmage or $20 for both the scrimmage and the barbecue. The money raised will go toward spirit gear and pre-game meals for the athletes and athletic gear including shoulder pads and helmets. The team parents are supplying all the food, including barbecued chicken and beef and a variety of salads, side dishes and desserts. There were a lot of people who came last year, said Michelle Koberstein, a team parent. Everyone had a good time. The scrimmage will give onlookers a sneak peak at this years team. The team will play in several waves, with the younger players scrimmaging against each other followed by the veteran players competing. After that, there will be a modified scrimmage trying to match the players for a more realistic game. From what Ive seen in practices, this will be a pretty good season, head coach Kaleb Mitchell said. |
