State of Colorado, Departement of Agriculture Morgan County and National Animal Identification System Get National Attention LAKEWOOD, Colo. For a day Morgan County and several of its residents had the opportunity to know what it feels like to be a star. Specific background scenes were selected, individuals were wired with a microphone, the light was turned on, the film camera began rolling, and the interview questions began. Some appeared veterans in front of the camera; others were obviously nervous and shy. The questions revolved around Morgan Countys implementation of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), a nationwide uniform system for all animals of any given species to support survey, control and eradication of animal diseases. The county is the first in the nation known to have 100 percent compliance with their youth fair entries and consequently attracted the attention of USDA officials in Washington, DC. ... Roger Koberstein of Holyoke (Phillips County) lent his computer knowledge and software program to the neighboring county, and put in his plug for technology. The technology really cuts down on the manpower to do these jobs. We broke down 97 goats in less than 50 minutes, so the speed of commerce is affected positively, certainly not negatively. ...
