Surname: Koberstein, Schilling
My grandfather, Ernst Wilhelm Koberstein & his son-in-law, Gus Schilling built a brick making kiln near Shaniko, Wasco county, OR and laid the brick for the Shaniko Hotel probably between 1909 and 1915,. I would appreciate any information on them or the hotel. Is it still standing? If so could someone send me a photo? I would be happy to reinburse any expenses incurred. Anything would be welcome! Thank you, Mary Gibson in Nebraska
Shaniko Hotel

Wasco County, OR Yes, Mary the Shaniko Hotel is still standing. Area residents enjoy the history of this old town that was once considered "the wool capital of the world" with cattle, wool and wheat being shipped out of the depot by the train load. In 1904 the total value of wool sold was $5 million dollars. Prosperity was not to last. The Dalles-California Highway bypassed Shaniko in 1925, railroad passenger service ended in 1936 and with regular freight service ending in 1942, Shaniko was doomed. By 1959 it was a bonafide ghost town and the existing buildings were allowed to deteriorate. We're happy to say, although not a thriving community, Shaniko once again has a few permanent residents. They have restored part of the old town and especially the hotel back to its early glory. Once a year local residents and area ranchers come together to celebrate and recreate Shanikos earlier years. "Shaniko Days" is held the first weekend in August. I believe the hotel, which is beautifully restored, is now a bed and breakfast. I know we have a picture of the hotel around here someplace, if you will send us your address we will be happy to send it to you. The hotels phone number is 1-541-489-3441 if you are interested in finding out more information and perhaps sharing yours. Best Wishes, Rod and Ruth Bourland

Viola (Rovaloff) Koberstine (link)61 lives in Spokane, Wash., with her husband, Delbert. They have two children, Raymond 90 and Lori 94. Viola remembers that Professor Stoehr, who taught Spirit of Prophecy and German, always challenged his students to be good witnesses and share truth with others. Viola is currently working part time and looking forward to full retirement. (Ed. Note: I believe the years given as '61 etc. are years they were at Walla Walla College, 204 South College Avenue, College Place, WA 99324.)
Submitter: Martha Finfrock re Henry W. Koberstein
Subject: Koberstein - Wiesner
Message: Henry W. Koberstein married Mary Elizabeth Wiesner in Waynesboro, PA on 23 Jun 1883. Mary was the daughter of Philip Wiesner and Mary Catherine Zook. I'm looking for any information on who Henry was and any children they may have had. The only other clue I have at this time is that my grandmother recalled visiting Koberstein "cousins" in the Chicago area soon after she married in 1912 and my dad thinks they may have had a son named Bernie. This is not my direct line, but I am trying to fill in the Wiesner line descendants. Any help or clues are greatly appreciated.

One of the most popular art galleries in Berlin is housed in a train station. The historic Hamburger Bahnhof, built in 1846 at the Tiergarten, was badly damaged during the Second World War, but has been restored and reopened, with some modern elements added to the architecture, as an exhibition venue for an extensive contemporary art collection. The former station now offers 107,639 square feet (10,000 sq metres) of space filled with works by the likes of Andy Warhol, Josephy Beuys and Roy Lichtenstein. The basis of the exhibition is the Marx private collection, but there are changing exhibitions and good examples of the Italian Transavanguardia and minimalist art on show too. Hi Terry,
I thought I had read a post from "someone" to you re: Koberstein-Schwarz. But, I admit I cannot remember where I saw this post. If you remember/know this person, could you forward them this email? Below you will find an extract from http://www.hauswedell-nolte.de/ who are auctioning off a painting of Frau von Koberstein. I've attached a .jpg of it as well - my antivirus is up to date. The exact link for the portrait is: http://www.hauswedell-nolte.de/cat_pics/0228.htm "1714 Bildnis Frau von Koberstein. Federzeichnung in Schwarz, teils laviert. 1866. 31,0 : 22,7 cm. GGD 1939 Resettlement Records Page
The Galizien German Descendants 1939 Resettlement records have been extracted from documents from the Berlin Document Center which were captured by the US government at the end of World War II. These records were created by ethnic Germans applying to resettle from the Russian part of Poland in 1939. At that time Russia and Germany had divided Poland roughly along the Warthe river as part of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact and many ethnic Germans either did not want to live in the Russian controlled territory of Poland or were forced to emigrate. Microfilms of these documents are currently available at Family History Centers of the LDS church and also at the US National Archives. The BDC Records contain much more than just these resettlement records but these Einwandererzentralstelle (EWZ) (literally Immigration Center) records can contain very valuable information about German families in Polish lands in 1939. Here is an example of one of the EWZ pages showing the record for a Daniel Hermann born Oct 3, 1921. Further information about the EWZ records is available at this external link. The GGD 1939 Resettlement records database is only a partial extraction of these EWZ records so if you cannot find your ancestor in our database you can look at the original documents yourself at any LDS Family History center. An index of which names are found on which LDS films can be found in this PDF Stamblatter Index on this site. There are 55694 individuals and 18689 families representing 5451 surnames in this database. These WWW pages were produced on 18-08-2004, 17:25:15.
