2 CONT I want to thank Dr. Runser, Dr. Fisk, Dr. Koberstein, doctors and nurses 
2 CONC in the emergency squad at Elyria Memorial Hospital for saving my life and 
2 CONC for the wonderful care I got in intensive care.  I want to thank the 
2 CONC Ridgeville Ambulance Service.  They did everything Godly possible.  What 
2 CONC can they do when a train is blocking the traffic on Rt. 20 by the Bendix 
2 CONC Westinghouse Automotive Ari Brake Co.?  They can't turn around because 
2 CONC Maddock and Rt. 76 crossing are probably blocked by trains.  The 
2 CONC ambulance arrived at my home in two minutes, but it arrived at the 
2 CONC hospital over ten minutes late.  I had no pulse.  I had an asthma attack, 
2 CONC but I ended up with heart damage, blood clots, fractured ribs which were 
2 CONC caused from the respirator that gave me back my breath.  But who do I 
2 CONC thank for the train?  There will be others that won't make it.  Maybe a 
2 CONC young father with small children who will pay with his life.  Who will 
2 CONC they than?
2 CONT I thank God for my life.  Can't something be done about those trains 
2 CONC before it is too late?

2 CONT Robert C. Koberstein, M.D., died on May 21, 2001, at his home in 
2 CONC Frankenmuth, Mich. Dr. Koberstein was born March 19, 1935, in Buffalo, 
2 CONC N.Y.  He served in the military during the Vietnam War. He was in private 
2 CONC practice from 1974 until 1986 in Appleton, Wis. After 1986 he worked in 
2 CONC internal medicine at the V.A. Hospital in Saginaw until his retirement 
2 CONC for health reasons. He married Sharon Crewdson in 1961; their marriage 
2 CONC was blessed with three children, David Koberstein and his friend Kris 
2 CONC Hauck of California; Jennifer (Anthony) Roda; and Amy (Tad) Segal, all of 
2 CONC Virginia. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Nicholas and 
2 CONC Elizabeth; a sister, Anne Koberstein; and his father, George (Liz) 
2 CONC Koberstein, all of New York.

2 CONC Syracuse, N.Y. She was a retired practical nurse for Onodaga County, 
2 CONC N.Y., and a member of West Bradenton Baptist Church. Survivors include a 
2 CONC daughter, Sharon C. Koberstein of Frankenmuth, Mich.; a son, Robert A. of 
2 CONC Richmond, Mass.; two sisters, Leona Furlot of Moncton, New Brunswick and 
2 CONC Pauline Withey of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; three brothers, Ivan Calhoun 
2 CONC of McGivney Junction, New Brunswick, Eugene Calhoun of St. John, New 
2 CONC Brunswick and Cleve Calhoun of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren; and 
2 CONC seven great- grandchildren. A service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First

2 CONT PITTSFIELD -- Bessie M. Crewdson, 83, of Melbourne Place Assisted Living 
2 CONC Community, died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Parker Ridge, 
2 CONC New Brunswick, on Dec. 8, 1915, daughter of Walter and Margaret Jean 
2 CONC Hunter Calhoun, she attended schools in Astle, New Brunswick. She moved 
2 CONC from Canada to Syracuse, N.Y., in 1952, and to Florida in 1974. A 
2 CONC resident of Bradenton, Fla., for 24 years, she then moved to Frankenmuth, 
2 CONC Mich., for six months. She had resided in Pittsfield for the past month. 
2 CONC Mrs. Crewdson was a homemaker, and was employed as a practical nurse for 
2 CONC Onondaga County, N.Y., retiring in the late 1960s. She was a member of 
2 CONC the West Bradenton Baptist Church. Her first husband, John E. Crewdson, 
2 CONC whom she married in June 1934, died in November 1984. Her second husband, 
2 CONC Richard Stead, whom she married in September 1990, died in April 1994. 
2 CONC She leaves a son, Robert A. Crewdson of Richmond; a daughter, Mrs. Sharon 
2 CONC C. Koberstein of Frankenmuth; two sisters, Mrs. Leona Furlot of Moncton, 
2 CONC New Brunswick, and Mrs. Pauline Withey of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; three

2 CONT The mirror image of the social, cultural, ethical and political interests 
2 CONC of a community are reflected in the newspapers which they read. The press 
2 CONC isn't just giving the public something to read. In order to remain 
2 CONC useful, the press must give the public what it needs. To this end 
2 CONC newspapers generate their form and their content. To a serious minded 
2 CONC community a superficial newspaper is not useful. With a sensation-loving 
2 CONC public the sensational presses find rich, fruitbearing ground. 
2 CONT We can say these things about the German press as it developed here in 
2 CONC this country - The strengths of the German Press are none other than 
2 CONC proof of a vital interest in the German language and German customs. 
2 CONC Secondly when a large German community can not get a German newspaper, 
2 CONC they have lost the memory of their tradition, their ancestry, their youth 
2 CONC and their vitality. That isn't to say that Buffalo's German population 
2 CONC has any lack of interest in its German community although the German 
2 CONC Press here cannot be labelled outstanding. The populace must continually 
2 CONC be on guard. 
2 CONT Just as the German people and their spirituality take many rich forms, so 
2 CONC too has a rich journalistic tradition evolved over time. It's many-sided, 
2 CONC like the Germans themselves. It's contentious, just like the community. 
2 CONC It delves into deeper problems, for this is the German way. 
2 CONT One may say that today's Buffalo no longer needs a German Press. There 
2 CONC are serious and recognizable indicators that the German language is 
2 CONC rapidly declining in the United States. There is much truth in this 
2 CONC statement. In order to approach the history of the German Press, let the 
2 CONC following be made known. 
2 CONT The first German newspaper in Buffalo saw the light of day on December 2, 
2 CONC 1837. Its name wasDer Weltbürger (The World Citizen)and it echoed the 
2 CONC sentiments of the German community, which cast off the old fatherland in 
2 CONC its wish to become a knowledgeable citizen of the New World. The paper 
2 CONC was democratic in nature. Its first editor and owner was Georg Zahn from 
2 CONC Zweibrücken. In 1840 Der Volksfreund (The People's Friend) appeared. It 
2 CONC was a Whig paper under the direction of W. A. Meyers. Despite the victory 
2 CONC of the Whig Party the paper didn't make it past the election. The Whig 
2 CONC Party bought the press and the supplies. Meyers later bought it back and 
2 CONC in 1842 started the weekly paper Der Freimütige und West New Yorker 
2 CONC Anzeiger (The Herald and Western New York Reporter), with Alexander E. 
2 CONC Krause as editor. The voice of the Herald was not to remain for long. 
2 CONC Ernst Osten bought the newspaper and it was subsumed by Das Buffalo 
2 CONC Tageblatt (The Buffalo Daily News) in 1845. The Herald remaining a weekly 
2 CONC supplement. In August of the same year the Daily News ended. Der 
2 CONC Telegraph (The Telegraph) took its place. Its first publisher was H.B. 
2 CONC Miller and Adolph Heilmann was its editor. In 1848 Der Freie Demokrat 
2 CONC (The Free Democrat) appeared with Karl Esslinger as publisher. It was an 
2 CONC organ of the Free Soil Movement. In 1850 Jakob Knapp and Carl de Haas 
2 CONC bought the Free Democrat and changed the name to Der Buffalo Demokrat 
2 CONC (The Buffalo Democrat). In November of the same year Knapp sold his 
2 CONC portion to Friedrich Held. The Buffalo Democrat appeared daily. On April 
2 CONC 18, 1853 "The World Citizen" and "The Free Democrat" merged under the 
2 CONC firm of Brunck, Held and Company. "The World Citizen" became a weekly 
2 CONC paper and "The Democrat" stayed as it was. In 1859 Carl de Haas left the 
2 CONC partnership. Brunck left in 1875, leaving Friedrich Held sole owner. His 
2 CONC son, Frank C.B. Held, maintains the traditional and democratic spirit of 
2 CONC "The Buffalo Democrat" today. 
2 CONT On May 3, 1853 "The Telegraph", a weekly publication, became Der Buffalo 
2 CONC Telegraph (The Buffalo Telegraph), a daily paper. This was an aggressive 
2 CONC Republican newspaper which had a morning and an evening edition during 
2 CONC the Civil War. By 1850 there was a religious newspaper called Der 
2 CONC Lügenfeind (The Enemy of Lies), an organ of the Free Christian 
2 CONC Fellowship. In 1853 it became Morgenröte (The Dawning Light). Once the 
2 CONC light faded, it returned to life as the Lichtfreund (The Light's Friend), 
2 CONC only to die shortly thereafter. Aurora, the Latin word for dawning light, 
2 CONC enjoyed a better fate than it's German counterpart. It was a Catholic 
2 CONC weekly established in 1853 by C. Wickmann, who was its editor until his 
2 CONC death in 1898. His son D. Wickmann then became editor. Todays' Buffaloer 
2 CONC Freie Presse (Buffalo Free Press) had two predecessors. First was the 
2 CONC Humoristischer Volksfreund (The Humorous People's Friend) published in 
2 CONC 1853 by Friedrich Reinecke which was then followed in 1856 by Buffalo 
2 CONC Allgemeine Zeitung (The Buffalo General News). Finally came "The Buffalo 
2 CONC Free Press", a daily paper, in 1860 under Friedrich Reinecke and Michael 
2 CONC Wiedrich. This was a Republican newspaper which was published by the Firm 
2 CONC of Reinecke and Zesch as of 1872. The fledgling paper, the Buffalo Union, 
2 CONC lasted for two days in 1864. The Amerikanischer Beobachter (The American 
2 CONC Observer), started by the the German contingent of the American Party of 
2 CONC Erie County at the time of Millard Fillmore's election, disappeared 
2 CONC suddenly in 1856. In 1857 the Buffalo Patriot lived a short life.
2 CONT In 1863 the Buffalo Journal merged with "The Buffalo Telegraph" after its 
2 CONC first month. Another Catholic weekly, the Central-Zeitung (The Central 
2 CONC Newspaper) appeared in 1867 under the direction of Joseph Hoag. Four 
2 CONC years later he moved the paper to New York to keep it from dying. For the 
2 CONC large number of German Catholics, the Buffalo Volksfreund (The Buffalo 
2 CONC People's Friend) came into being in 1868. 
2 CONT To the credit of the German Catholic Orphanage the Christliche Woche (The 
2 CONC Christian Weekly) appeared in 1875. Today "The Christian Weekly" is 
2 CONC merged with the Aurora under the title Aurora und Christliche Woche (The 
2 CONC Aurora and Christian Weekly). In the same year the Sonntags-Herald (The 
2 CONC Sunday Herald) appeared. It was the first Sunday German newspaper. It 
2 CONC disappeared after 8 months. Following a split in the Republican Party in 
2 CONC 1875 the Tägliche Republikaner (The Daily Republican) appeared. In 1876 a 
2 CONC second Sunday paper, called Die Buffalo Tribüne (The Buffalo Tribune) 
2 CONC appeared. In 1877 the Tägliche Tribüne (The Daily Tribune) was 
2 CONC established as an organ of the Worker's Party. Like "The Buffalo 
2 CONC Tribune", it was a Sunday paper. Both papers were acquired by the German 
2 CONC Republican Association in 1878. "The Daily Tribune" ceased to exist and 
2 CONC "The Buffalo Tribune" became a Sunday supplement of "The Daily 
2 CONC Republican". By November of 1878 the German Republican Printing 
2 CONC Association sold its newspaper to the company of Reinecke and Zesch. This 
2 CONC firm suspended the Daily Republican and changed the Buffalo Tribune to a 
2 CONC Sunday paper for "The Buffalo Free Press". In 1877 the weekly 
2 CONC publication, the Evangelisch Gemeinde Zeitung (The Evangelical 
2 CONC Congregation News), became the daily independent paper Volksblatt für 
2 CONC Stadt und Land (The City and County People's Report). "The Daily Tribune" 
2 CONC disappeared in 1877 and the last "People's Report" was 1880. The only 
2 CONC daily papers left were "The Buffalo Democrat", "The Buffalo Free Press", 
2 CONC and "The Buffalo People's Friend". There were various other publications 
2 CONC which lasted a short time, such as the Arbeitstimme am Erie (The Worker's 
2 CONC Voice on Erie) which existed from May to November of 1878; Die Laterne 
2 CONC (The Lantern) of 1880 later became the Banner, an organ of the Greenback 
2 CONC Party until 1883; the Buffalo Wecker (The Buffalo Awakener) was a weekly 
2 CONC paper which appeared in 1880 and remained for 7 weeks; In 1891 the 
2 CONC Sonntags-Post (The Sunday Post),a humorous Sunday paper, existed until 
2 CONC its owner, Hermann Hoffmann, died; Niagara was a Catholic Sunday paper of 
2 CONC 1898 which only lasted a short time. The Arbeiter-Zeitung (The Worker's 
2 CONC News), a socialist newspaper, appeared in 1887. It has fortunately 
2 CONC disappeared from the gathering of German workers. 
2 CONT May the current German newspapers in Buffalo always be aware of their 
2 CONC cultural mission. As German newspapers, they are called upon to preserve 
2 CONC our mother tongue in our new land. May the Germans of our city be aware 
2 CONC that it is their duty to support the German Press.
