someone was always 2 CONC getting into something. 2 CONT In the early yeras we would go to Saturday School at our Lutheran Church 2 CONC where we learned some German reading and writing.  We also were taught 2 CONC our catechism, Bible stories, and songs. 2 CONT Once we got home from school, there were many chores for everyone, such 2 CONC as hauling water, wood, oil for the lamps, gathering eggs, cleaning 2 CONC barns, milking cows, and many other chores.  We really didn't have much 2 CONC time for play.  Our summers were also spent herding cows.  There weren't 2 CONC many fences at that time so we had to pack lunches, and spend the day 2 CONC keeping the cows in tow. 2 CONT When we did have some time for play we enjoyed playing ball, hide and 2 CONC seek, cops and robbers, and making tree houses.  In the winter we would 2 CONC sleigh ride and skate onthe slough. 2 CONT In the early 40's, Dad bought his first car which was and early 30's 2 CONC Chevrolet.  It certainly was a treat to have our own vehicle.  Soon after 2 CONC this Dad also got his first tracter - a John Deere - which was a real 2 CONC boon to the farming operation. 2 CONT Then about 1943, our new two storey house was built.  Was it ever nice 2 CONC toahve all the extra space.  Moving day was certainly exciting! 2 CONT In July 1944 another boby, Edwin, made his appearance.  We were all a 2 CONC fair bit older so this baby was very exciting and had many sisters and 2 CONC brothers to look after him.  Mom and Dad certainly enjoyed having him 2 CONC around when the rest of the family left home. 2 CONT Dad's farming operation got bigger and better all the time.  With more 2 CONC machinery and more land, farming was a little easier, and later on we got 2 CONC running water in the house and power which came  to the area about 1952. 2 CONC  This was truly a blessing. 2 CONT I remember the two highlights of the year.  The big Christmas concert the 2 CONC teacher and pupils worked so hard to put on in the Meadowview Hall, then 2 CONC on Christmas eve we got all bundled up for the trip to our church for the 2 CONC children's Christmas program.  Waht excitement this was!  The tree looked 2 CONC awesome with it's tinsel and it's candles burning.  Inthe early years we 2 CONC went to church by horse and sleigh, so it was a cold trip.  The in the 2 CONC summer there was the community picnic at the picnic grounds which was 2 CONC also a treat as that is where we tasted our first ice cream and 2 CONC watermelon. 2 CONT Also the excitement in the early years was going to the music festivals 2 CONC and track meets which were held at Cherhill, Rochfort Bridge, and 2 CONC Mayerthorpe.  It was a nice outing for us all.  I also remember our first 2 CONC trip to the city in the back of a truck.  Our teacher, Mrs. Allen, took 2 CONC us to many interesting places in the city. 2 CONT It didn't take long and we grew up, married, and moved on to another 2 CONC phase of our lives. 2 CONT Eleanor married Jim Wharton of Shoal Creek in Nov., 1948.  They live in 2 CONC Edmonton where Jim works for Canada Cement.  They have two children, 2 CONC Marlene and Duane, and also five grandchildren. 2 CONT Evelyn married Art Klute in June, 1952.  Art was from the Edson area, and 2 CONC they lived in Edson, Jasper, and now Edmonton, where Art works with the 2 CONC CNR.  They have four children, Gayleen, Gary, Ken, and Wendy.  They also 2 CONC have five grandchildren. 2 CONT Ruth married Fred Rolof from south of the Pembina River in Aug. 1954. 2 CONC  They lived many years in Sangudo where Fred was administrator of the 2 CONC county of Lac Ste. Anne, and now they live in Leduc where Fred is 2 CONC administrator of Leduc County.  They have four children, Debbie, Rod, 2 CONC Dawn, and Linda, and they also have five grandchildren. 2 CONT Herb married Lydia Dotzlof of Neerlandia in July 1962.  He is on a farm 2 CONC near his home place.  They have three children, Darcy, Bradley, and 2 CONC Tracy, who are all on their own now too. 2 CONT Arnold married Dawn Wilson of Meadowview area in Sept., 1962.  Thery are 2 CONC on the home farm, NE 24-57-5-W5, and Arnold is also administrator of the 2 CONC County of Lac Ste. Anne.  They have three children, Brenda, Dianne, and 2 CONC Lindsey.  They enjoy living in the country. 2 CONT Edwin married Pryna Reinsberger of Lacombe in Aug., 1968.  Ed is 2 CONC assistant administrator with the County of Lacombe.  They have tow 2 CONC children, Vance, and Denise, who are active in sports. 2 CONT Dad certainly enjoyed his farming operation immensely until he became ill 2 CONC in 1967, and passed away in Sept. of that year. 2 CONT He was quick witted and fun to be around.  He really enjoyed the 2 CONC outdoors, fishing, and anything to do with sports, plus his love for God 2 CONC and fellowman. 2 CONT Arnold and Dawn then took over the home farm and Mother moved to 2 CONC Edmonton. She still enjoys her good health, her church and her family. 2 CONT The family gets together annually for a family picnic in the summer.  We 2 CONC now number 54 in Jan. of 1988, so have certainly increased in size since 2 CONC 1928.  Live has indeed been good to us, and we have been blessed with 2 CONC lovely families and good health. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 DEC 2010 3 TIME 09:12:51 0 @I3@ INDI 1 NAME Julianna /Seidletz/ 1 SEX F 1 DEAT 2 DATE FEB 2000 2 PLAC Alberta, Canada 2 SOUR @S1@ 3 DATA 4 DATE 4 NOV 2000 1 _UID E671C64A3D2C6E419ECE8DAC771175426361 1 FAMS @F2@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 4 NOV 2000 3 TIME 10:37:55 0 @I4@ INDI 1 NAME Gottlieb /Koberstein/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1883 1 _UID 201325ABC3E5B94EA0825E54CDAEC151133C 1 FAMS @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 DEC 2010 3 TIME 09:08:47 0 @I5@ INDI 1 NAME Gustav /Koberstein/ 2 NICK Gus 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1900 1 DEAT 2 DATE 14 MAR 1976 2 PLAC Canada 1 _UID 880206396D507A4BB9E81FECB06089F48426 1 FAMS @F7@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 NOTE Koberstein, Gustav and Emilie (by son Robert Koberstein) 2 CONT I moved to Stewartfield with my parents Gustav and Emilie Koberstein, 2 CONC sisters Elsie and Martha, and grandmother Seidlitz in the spring of 1931, 2 CONC from Mellowdale, Alta. where my parents had farmed. 2 CONT I remember this move vividly.  Elsie and I sat on the horse-drawn rack 2 CONC which was loaded with hay, and driven by Ed Dotzlaf.  Along with us were 2 CONC a dog and her pups, and the family sewing machine.  Following behind were 2 CONC the cattle driven by a man on horseback, and Ephraim Wegner on foot. 2 CONC  Ephraim, (my future wife's uncle), walked the whole 25 miles, and after 2 CONC eating, refused to stay the night with us.  He walked back to Mellowdale 2 CONC that evening.  Following the cattle, Dad drove a wagon load of household 2 CONC goods, then others followed with wagon loads of our belongings. 2 CONC  Grandmother, Mother and baby Martha rode in fine style in fine style in 2 CONC Wegner's car. 2 CONT We rented a quarter section across the road from the Stewartfield school, 2 CONC and the other farm one mile further north.  I was in grade two then, and 2 CONC we lived on the north quarter for three years. 2 CONT We then moved to the NW 31-57-5-W5, in Garden view, where the Lutheran 2 CONC Church now stands.  There, in 1936, my brother Reiny was born.  Elsie 2 CONC married Ed Ratz in Nov. 1937 and lived near us. 2 CONT In the 1930's, Father had one of the first grain binders in the district, 2 CONC and cut grain for many farmers.  In those days they didn't have binders 2 CONC of their own or many acres in crop.  We also had a threshing machine, and 2 CONC threshed for others, sometimes a whole month or until it snowed.  The 2 CONC work was hard, but the comradery of the men, and the fine food prepared 2 CONC by the women always made this a favorite time of year for me. 2 CONT From 1932 to 1940, Father also had the contract to haul mail from 2 CONC Stewartfield and Lawton post offices to Barrhead.  Twice a week, every 2 CONC Tuesday and Friday, the mail had to go, come rain shine, snow or in -40 2 CONC degree temperatures.  He received $2.25 for each trip.  At first horses 2 CONC were used, then a truck.  It was a long, hard trip in the summer mud as 2 CONC none of the roads were gravelled.  When it rained, chains had to be put 2 CONC on the truck, and sometimes left on both ways.  We couldn't get intohigh 2 CONC gear all the way to town, and the trip would take two or three hours each 2 CONC way.  The winters weren't any better as the roads weren't plowed out in 2 CONC those days.  Now, with gravelled roads, the miles pass swiftly by.  The 2 CONC hills seem much smaller too, since they have been cut down and vehicles 2 CONC have more power. 2 CONT We also hauled eggs and cream to Barrhead for people living along the 2 CONC mail route.  Mother was sometimes asked to bring back a few groceries, 2 CONC yard goods, clothing, or shoes for the children, as people did not get to 2 CONC town very often.  It was amazing how Mother knew what size of clothing 2 CONC and shoes to get.  They rarely had to be taken back for exchange. 2 CONT My buddy, Robert Ryks, and I made many trips togther, hauling grain by 2 CONC sleigh to the Barrhead elevators - he with his team and I withours.  When 2 CONC it was cold we walked more than we rode. 2 CONT Gustav and Emilie, moved to a farm one mile north of Barrhead in the fall 2 CONC of 1944, where they farmed until retiring to Edmonton.  They had four 2 CONC children. 2 CONT I, Robert, stayed on the home place at Gardenview until 1947, thenmoved 2 CONC to a fram at Barrhead.  I married EvelynWegner on July 29, 1948.  After 2 CONC several moves, we have lived in Hinton, Alta. for the past 27 years, 2 CONC where I operate a grader for the pulp mill. 2 CONT We have six children. 2 CONT Shirley was born July 19, 1950 at Westlock, Alta.  She married Kenneth 2 CONC Fuller and lives in Hinton. 2 CONT Allan was born June 2, 1951 at Westlock, and lives in Edmonton. 2 CONT Carol was born Oct. 22, 1952 at Edson, Alta.  She married Barry Boychuk 2 CONC and lives in Sherwood Park, Alta. 2 CONT Kenneth was born April 5, 1954 at Mercoal, Alta.  He married Sheila 2 CONC Stapleton and they live in Vermilion, Alta. 2 CONT Randy was born Mar. 1, 1958 at Mercoal, Alta.  He lives in Hinton. 2 CONT Elsie (see Ed Ratz story). 2 CONT Martha lives in Edmonton. 2 CONT Reiny lives in Barrhead. 2 CONT Grandmother, Karoline Seidlitz, always lived with Emilie and Gustav.  She 2 CONC died Aug. 11, 1965 in Edmonton, at age 93. 2 CONT Emilie passed away Feb. 23, 1974, aged 72, and Gustav March 14, 1976 at 2 CONC 81 years. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 DEC 2010 3 TIME 09:10:05 0 @I6@ INDI 1 NAME Olga /Koberstein/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE JUN 1903 1 _UID 50EDA97735710B4F9F31B1E7AB06FA56C6B8 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 DEC 2010 3 TIME 09:10:55 0 @I7@ INDI 1 NAME Frieda /Koberstein/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE SEP 1904 1 _UID 25B8BEA00B5D814BAD36E07476370BDC3AA1 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 DEC 2010 3 TIME 09:11:27 0 @I8@ INDI 1 NAME Emma /Koberstein/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE OCT 1906 2 PLAC Kamien, Poland 1 _UID DEBB342600801E4A87893FA6A5A4D90F01D1 1 FAMS @F32@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 DEC 2010 3 TIME 09:12:23 0 @I9@ INDI 1 NAME Berta /Koberstein/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE SEP 1910 2 PLAC Kamien, Poland 1 _UID A53FB646363B7B4BA7D1BF1D8CCCA5C22A9F 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 DEC 2010 3 TIME 09:13:54 0 @I10@ INDI 1 NAME Arnholdt Rudolph /Koberstein/ 2 NICK Arnold 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE SEP 1939 2 PLAC Canada 1 DEAT 2 DATE 11 FEB 2008 2 PLAC Canada 1 _UID 87F4A3DEFC6D154D85EB211DB026D1AECA60 1 FAMS @F3@ 1 FAMC @F2@ 1 NOTE Arnold Koberstein 2 CONT KOBERSTEIN, Arnold Rudolf Arnold Rudolf Koberstein, late of Meadowview, 2 CONC passed away in Barrhead on February 11, 2008 at the age of 68 years. 2 CONC Arnold is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Dawn; his two 2 CONC daughters: Brenda (Ken) Breitkreitz, of Stony Plain; Dianne (Allen) 2 CONC Pukanski, of Devon; and one son Lindsey, of Tofield; his two beloved 2 CONC grandchildren: Haley and Hanna Pukanski; three sisters and two brothers: 2 CONC Eleanor (Jim) Wharton, of Edmonton; Evelyn (Art) Klute, of Edmonton; Ruth 2 CONC (Fred) Rolof, of Leduc; Herb (Lydia) Koberstein, of Meadowview; and Eddie 2 CONC (Pryna) Koberstein, of Lacombe; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and 2 CONC many dear friends. Doctors were treating him for seven years before it was discovered 2 CONC his arthritis was actually caused by HHC. 2 CONT Many doctors overlooked it because until only recently, physicians were 2 CONC taught that HHC was extremely rare. 2 CONT If the condition is not discovered, the organs are damaged from too much 2 CONC iron and it can become life threatening as the individual affected may 2 CONC get Cirrhosis and liver cancer, congestive heart failure and diabetes. 2 CONT Ed, who is a Lacombe Town Councilor, was thankful his condition was 2 CONC discovered when he was 48, but he says, ?a lot of damage had been done.? 2 CONT When he was first diagnosed with the condition, he already had cirrhosis 2 CONC of the liver and doctors gave him only five years to live. 2 CONT "That was 22 years ago, so things have come a long way," said Ed. 2 CONT He also had to have both hips replaced. 2 CONT "If I hadn?t, I would not be walking today," he said. 2 CONT Before it was diagnosed, the condition caused him a lot of pain and 2 CONC discomfort. 2 CONT "I couldn?t sleep. I would toss and turn all night long and was extremely 2 CONC fatigued all the time." 2 CONT HHC is a genetic disorder and in retrospect, Ed says he sees that both 2 CONC his parents suffered from it, but it was diagnosed back then. His father 2 CONC died in his 50s from pancreatic cancer and his mother of diabetes, both 2 CONC symptoms of HHC. 2 CONT "When we think back very definitely they probably had it but it was never 2 CONC diagnosed," said Ed. 2 CONT HCC is a recessive genetic disorder. It is not necessary for parents to 2 CONC be suffering from it in order for their children to develop HHC. If 2 CONC parents are both carriers then their children are at risk of developing 2 CONC HHC. 2 CONT When Ed was diagnosed, Pryna says, ?our children were young and we were 2 CONC concerned what it meant to them.? 2 CONT The two children underwent tests. Their daughter has the genes but does 2 CONC not suffer from iron overload. Their son has both genes, and does suffer 2 CONC from iron overload. 2 CONT "He caught it early enough, so he can live a normal life without any 2 CONC damage," said Ed. ?If it's diagnosed early enough then you avoid all the 2 CONC problems. If undiagnosed it?s fatal.? 2 CONT Because both children were found with the genes, that meant Pryna must 2 CONC also be a carrier. She was tested and discovered to be a carrier 2 CONC ,although not having the iron overload. 2 CONT Treatment consists of the regular removal of blood (phlebotomy) by the 2 CONC individual affected regularly giving blood. As the body makes new red 2 CONC blood cells to replace the ones lost during phlebotomy, iron is pulled 2 CONC out of storage from the organs, tissues and joints. Then, over time, the 2 CONC body iron levels return to normal level and the person can live a normal 2 CONC life without any complications. 2 CONT Ed is able to control HHC by blood donations every two months. 2 CONT But there are some activities he has had to abandon. 2 CONT "There's lots of things I can't do. The last couple years, I didn't golf 2 CONC at all because it was not worth the agony afterwards, the arthritic 2 CONC pain," said Ed. 2 CONT HHC is often called the silent killer because it is often overlooked as a 2 CONC possible cause of death post mortem. It is most common in people of 2 CONC Northern European, British and Irish descent and is caused by a gene 2 CONC mutation. 2 CONT Symptoms include chronic fatigue, arthritis, liver problems, heart 2 CONC irregularities, diabetes, abdominal pain, and shortness of breath. 2 CONC Although it is not curable, early diagnosis can prevent the symptoms and 2 CONC damage to vital organs, allowing the individual to have a normal life 2 CONC span. 2 CONT May is Hemochromatosis Month in Canada. Anyone needing more information 2 CONC can contact the Hemochromatosis Society at (604) 279-7135 or at 2 CONC www.toomuchiron.ca. Or locally, they can call Pryna at 782-6010. 2 CONT Early detection is crucial and Ed says, "It's important that people push 2 CONC their doctor for testing. It's a very simple blood test and will confirm 2 CONC if there is an iron overload." 2 CONT -editor@lacombeglobe.com 1 CHAN 2 DATE 20 APR 2010 3 TIME 22:48:08 0 @I19@ INDI 1 NAME Lindsey Arnold /Koberstein/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1973 2 PLAC Alberta, Canada 1 _UID 7EB781DA507F3B4C9E659D41C48DC88D6D62 1 FAMC @F3@ 1 NOTE E-mail dated 9/4/2000 2 CONT Terry, 2 CONT 2 CONT Many thanks for your reply. 2 CONT I am still amzed at the blazing speed with which we can communicate these 2 CONC days. "It's a wonderful service for people that helps 2 CONC meet their needs and the needs of the businesses involved." 2 CONT 2 CONT As the local face of Welcome Wagon in Lacombe, Alta., Pryna Koberstein 2 CONC has been busy lately hustling from home to home. 2 CONT In the waning days of summer, she visits newcomers at a rate of every 2 CONC other day, in addition to keeping up with locals as they embrace new 2 CONC babies. And that, she says of the community’s population boom, is “just 2 CONC the tip of the iceberg.” 2 CONT The changes are happening fast. Koberstein has watched her hometown of 2 CONC more than four decades transform from a small, central Alberta farming 2 CONC community into a desirable, full-fledged city, part of an overall growth 2 CONC corridor now stretching from Edmonton to Calgary. 2 CONT “I have seen a shift from when I started [with Welcome Wagon] four years 2 CONC ago from mostly seniors and retirees in the last year to mostly families 2 CONC and career adults,” Ms. Koberstein said. 2 CONT While some other small communities have struggled with population 2 CONC declines and budgetary gaps sending them scurrying to the province for 2 CONC dissolution or to their neighbours for amalgamation, Lacombe and a number 2 CONC of similar Alberta communities have flourished. 2 CONT 2 CONT Drawing on its agricultural roots as well the oil and gas industry that 2 CONC surrounds it, the once tiny village named in 1896 after a French-Catholic 2 CONC missionary grew large enough that in 2010, Lacombe was officially 2 CONC christened with city status. 2015-16 2 CONT Barrhead teenager to further education and hockey career in US 2 CONT Apr 22, 2014 06:00 am | By Marcus Day | The Barrhead Leader 2 CONT Nikolas Koberstein’s professional hockey ambitions have received another 2 CONC big boost. 2 CONT 2 CONT Just months after he joined Olds Grizzlys in the Alberta Junior Hockey 2 CONC League (AJHL), the Barrhead teenager has been accepted to the University 2 CONC of Alaska Fairbanks for the 2015-16 season. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Alaska offer was one of many he received in his efforts to further 2 CONC his education and hockey career. 2 CONT 2 CONT It means he will follow in the footsteps of former Grizzlys Ian Perkins, 2 CONC Jim Lawrence, Darcy Campbell and others who have gone to Fairbanks. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grizzlys head coach Brett Hopfe said he could not be more thrilled for 2 CONC Nik. 2 CONT 2 CONT “Nik has had many generous offers to move on to the next level and has 2 CONC chosen UAF, which is a great school with a brand new state of the art 2 CONC dressing room,” he said. 2 CONT 2 CONT Hopfe said the Grizzlys had been happy to help Nik develop into a force 2 CONC for the Alaska Nanooks. 2 CONT 2 CONT “With Nik’s skill set and work ethic I would not be surprised to see him 2 CONC playing at the professional level when his time with UAF is done,” he 2 CONC said. 2 CONT 2 CONT He added that the Grizzly organization wanted to congratulate Nikolas and 2 CONC his family on the teenager’s latest accomplishment. 2 CONT 2 CONT Nikolas was one of 13 players to make commitment to Division 1 programs 2 CONC since the league held its AJHL showcase last September in Spruce Grove. 2 CONT 2 CONT “It’s fantastic,” Nikolas said of the exposure in the AJHL. “There’s 2 CONC always people watching you, every game. The showcase was crazy. You 2 CONC couldn’t really let it distract you because you wanted to play your best, 2 CONC but there were a ton of schools watching.” 2 CONT 2 CONT A 17-year-old rookie in the AJHL, Nikolas has adjusted well, leading 2 CONC Grizzlys’ defensemen in scoring. Immediately after the showcase he was in 2 CONC contact with multiple schools, but a visit from Alaska head coach Dallas 2 CONC Ferguson clinched it for him. 2 CONT 2 CONT “He showed a lot of interest, and my family and I really liked him,” said 2 CONC Nikolas. “He’s a Western Canadian guy, a farm boy, just like me. When he 2 CONC came down to visit it just felt right.” 2 CONT 2 CONT For Nikolas, who attended a College Hockey Inc. summit in Spruce Grove 2 CONC two years ago, college hockey has always been a goal, even after being 2 CONC drafted in the seventh round by the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats 2 CONC in 2011. 2 CONT 2 CONT “I tried to keep all my options open,” he said. “Schooling has always 2 CONC been important to me, and it makes sense to pursue it while playing 2 CONC hockey at such a high level.” 2 CONT 2 CONT In February, Nikolas was flown up to Fairbanks for a couple of days to 2 CONC meet the players, see the campus and watch a game. 2 CONT 2 CONT “He was totally excited,” said Nikolas’s father, Brian. 2 CONT 2 CONT In March, Nikolas had another reason to celebrate: he was named in the 2 CONC 2013-14 Reebok AJHL League teams and CCM AJHL All-Rookie teams. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was selected for the CCM South Division All-Rookie team. 2 CONT 2 CONT Nikolas also made news when he was picked to play in the 2013 Canadian 2 CONC Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Prospects Games in Nova Scotia, an event 2 CONC created to showcase 40 of the top National Hockey League prospects in the 2 CONC CJHL 2 CONT 2 CONT The Prospects Games – hosted for a second straight year by Digby and 2 CONC Yarmouth – were held in conjunction with the 2013 World Junior A 2 CONC Challenge in Yarmouth. Player selection for the games is a joint 2 CONC initiative of the CJHL and NHL Central Scouting. The 6 ft. 2 in., 185 lb. 2 CONC Nikolas was one of three AJHL players chosen. 2 CONT 2 CONT It was on June 1, 2013, that Barrhead-raised Nikolas signed a one-year 2 CONC contract with the Grizz, who compete in the southern division of the 2 CONC AJHL. 2 CONT 2 CONT His decision was based on a belief that it would help him go to a U.S. 2 CONC college and experience top-level coaching. News that he is Alaska-bound 2 CONC has vindicated that decision. 2 CONT 2 CONT Over the last few years the former Barrhead Composite High School 2 CONC student’s hockey star has shone brilliantly. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 2009 he joined the Spruce Grove PAC Saints’ ‘AAA’ bantam team, ending 2 CONC the 2010/11 season with a record of four goals and 19 assists for 23 2 CONC points through 28 games. 2 CONT 2 CONT On May 5, 2011, he was drafted in the seventh round by the Regina Pats of 2 CONC the Western Hockey League and last season he played for St. Albert 2 CONC Raiders. 2 CONT 2 CONT Going to Alaska will broaden more than Nik’s sporting horizons. 2 CONT 2 CONT Alaska is a U.S. state in the northwest extremity of the North American 2 CONC continent. Bordering the state is Canada to the east, the Arctic Ocean to 2 CONC the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. 2 CONT 2 CONT One of Alaska’s landmarks is Mount McKinley, which is 20,320 ft. above 2 CONC sea level, making it the highest peak in North America. Other features 2 CONC include the 2,000-mile long Yukon River, an estimated 100,000 glaciers, 2 CONC 6,640 miles of coastline, and more than 70 potentially active volcanoes. 2 CONT 2 CONT According to the official Alaska state website, many visitors have 2 CONC pleasant surprises in store: weather, road conditions and prices are 2 CONC better than many think. 2 CONT 2 CONT During summer, for instance, average daytime temperatures range from the 2 CONC 60s to the 90s. Motorists are also relieved to discover that almost the 2 CONC entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and about half 2 CONC of the roads in the state’s highway system are paved. 2 CONT 2 CONT Contrary to popular belief, prices in the state are generally reasonable. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 24 APR 2014 3 TIME 00:31:52 0 @I106@ INDI 1 NAME Alfred // 1 SEX M 1 _UID
