Posting in Ancestry.com database by Gary Kobersteen Kelly (name legally changed from Ronald Gary Kobersteen:
"Carl was my dad's (Ronald John's father). Carl was my grandfather and shared several bits of information to me. The first was that the first Kobersteen to came to America from Germany, was seventeen and stowed away on a ship. He was escaping the conscription o Kaiser. The second item was that the name Kobersteen was actually Koberstein. The "i" was dropped in recording due to the dot over the "i" being omitted."
"My given name is Ronald Gary Kobersteen. Ron was my father. Carl was my grandfather and was Ron's Dad. Hannah was my grandmother and Ron's mother. I had a legal name change from Ronald Gary Kobersteen to Gary Kobersteen Kelly in 1965. I was told by Carl Kobersteen that our name's spelling was changed from Koberstein to Kobersteen because it was recorded with out the dot on the i. Carl Kobersteen also told me that the first Kobersteen to came to American in the 1850's from Germany by stowing away on a ship at age seventeen. He was excaping Kaiser's conscription."Newspaper entries for Koberstee(i)n:

Mrs. Carl Koberstein and children left Tuesday for Milwaukee, and after a short visit there they will visit her sister at Okauchee.Reference that indicates that Kilbourn of old is now named Wisconsin Dells: http://www.dells.com/dellshistory/index.htm
One of the oldest sites to appear on maps of the western Great Lakes region is the "Dalles" of the Wisconsin River. It was identified as a convenient reference point by French explorers in the 1700's. The name stuck after the French explorers left Wisconsin, with the spelling and pronunciation Anglicized as the "dells". When the railroad arrived in 1857, the new village established at the point where the tracks crossed the Wisconsin River, was named Kilbourn City in honor of the railroad's president - but locals and visitors alike never stopped referring to the area as the "Dells". In 1931, the city of Kilbourn officially changed its name to Wisconsin Dells.

Hi, below is the latest info I have on this family. You will notice that the name spelling is BERDOLL and that is correct. Your Hannah and my Josephine ended up using the spelling of BERDALL. I do not know when the changed, but the records in the Columbia County Court House in Wisconsin are clear. In addition the LDS records list the French spelling as BERDOLL and that is where Louis was born. As time permits I will dig deeper. Thanks for your info, Armin Gumerman
