Koberstein families in Landsberg an der Warthe

This is an effort to align all Koberstein family lines that came from Landsberg and der Warthe, Frankfurt, Brandenburg, Preussen.

Andreas Koberstein (Barwalde 1769 & 1789)

Son of Christoph

Andreas Koberstein born 1789, son of Christoph (est. Birth 1769), married Frau Wiedner.  He had a daughter, Friederike who was born about 1802 in Bärwalde, Neumark, Prussia.  Thus Christoph’s estimated birth year is close enough to be the Christoph of Colonie Brinsk.  However the Colonie Brinsk/Landsberg Christoph was married in 1794.  Andreas is an unlikely son.

Andreas Koberstein (Friedeberg, 1789)

There is either another or the same Andreas Koberstein born about 1789 in Landsberg an der Warthe.  He married Caroline Koberstein on 25 Oct 1822 at Landsberg an der Warthe.  Caroline was born about 1800.  Born to them was Caroline Ernestine on 16 May 1824 and christened on 19 May 1824 in Friedeberg.  There is also an Andreas and Karoline Koberstein in the Ancestry Eastern Provinces database.  They are listed as the parents of Ernestine Karoline Helle geb Koberstein (born about 1825 and died on 24 Jan 1885 at Landsberg).  Emma Hagemann geb. Koberstein was born about 1831 in Friedeberg.  She died on 13 Jan 1908 at Landsberg living at Luisenstrasse 17.  These two Andreas are probably the same person.  It has a rather wide range of children births: 1802 to a first wife, then 1824 and 1825 to a second wife (marriage on 1822).

Here is a translation of the death record of Emma Hagemann.

German English
77 Jahre alt, evangelischer religion, wohnhaft in Landsberg / Warthe, Wittre des angellich im Jahre 1895 verstorbanen Sattlermeister August Hagemann, zuletzt wohnhaft im Landsberg / Warthe.

77 years old, of Protestant religion, residing in Landsberg/Warthe, widow of the saddler August Hagemann, who died in 1895, and who last resided in Landsberg/Warthe.

Tochter des Wallmeisters Andreas Koberstein und dessen ehefrau Karoline, geboren Koberstein baidz verstorban und zuletzt wohnhaft in Landsberg/Warthe, zu Landsbert/Warthe in ihrar Wohunng. Daughter of master builder Andreas Koberstein and his wife Karoline, née Koberstein, who died prematurely and was last residing in Landsberg/Warthe, at her home in Landsberg/Warthe.

It is clear from the husbands occupation of saddler he was involved the the leather works of the Koberstein family in Landsberg an der Warthe.

This FamilySearch decendancy is the most recent construction of this Christoph family.

August Koberstein (Koltschen 1824)

August Koberstein who was born in Költschen in 1824 had son had three known children as follows:

  1. Maria Augusta Koberstein born in Landsberg an der Warthe in 1853
  2. Emil Max Koberstein born on 23 Mar 1860, however all three of his children have documented births in Landsberg an der Warthe.
  3. Otto Koberstein born in 1873 and died at Landsberg an der Warthe on 21 Mar 1900)

His father was thought to be Christoph Koberstein of Colonie Brinsk.  This determination is based on dying in Colonie Brinsk and his birth date being such that he could only be a son at that year and in that small place. It was found out that he was not a child but another child was found to have a birth date to close to allow this.

This FamilySearch decendancy is the most recent construction of this Johann August Koberstein family.

This is the Koberstein family that I got an Ancestry DNA positive match on December 25, 2025. I have been unable to find the link to the match again.

Berthold Koberstein (Landsberg 1829)

August Gustav Koberstein (1840 ND)

August Gustav Koberstein was born 2 Dec 1840 at Dammbusch, OstSternberg which is adjacent to Költschen and very near Landsberg an der Warthe.  This birth location was given on his son, Hermann, birth record.  His wife Emilie Amarlia geb. Koberstein was born 27 Jan 1842 at Hammerwiesen which is also adjacent to Költschen and very near Landsberg an der Warthe.  Here is a family list with locations of birth:
  1. August Gustav Koberstein b. 2 Dec 1840 at Dammbusch + Emilie Amarlia geb. Koberstein b. 27 Jan 1842 at Hammerwiesen, Oststernberg.  Just to the upper right of Koltschen on the map.
    1. Yata or Ida born 1858 in Germany
    2. Herman born 28 Feb 1870 at Waldau, Flatow, West Prussia (source didn’t indicate Kreis but assumed from the death) and died 29 Mar 1880 at Waldau, Flatow, West Prussia
    3. Anna A. born Dec 1872 or Jan 1873 at Zempleburg, Flatow, West Prussia (from index to baptisms for Zempleburg that gave baptism as Jan 1873)
    4. Gustav August Jr. born April  1875 in Germany
    5. August Hermann born 27 Jun 1876 at Faldan, Germany (from Declaration of Intention to Naturalize)
    6. Bertha born 1880 at probably Waldau, West Prussia based on death and died 2 Feb 1881 at Waldau, Flatow, West Prussia
    7. Ernest R. Hermann born 9 Dec 1881 at Waldau, Flatow, West Prussia and died 1969 in Benton, Oregon.
    8. Auguste born 1884 at unknown location and died 11 Sep 1885 at Gross Lossburg, Flatow, West Prussia

Basicly the parents were born and married near Koltschen/Landsberg and probably all but maybe the first child was born in Kreis Flatow, West Prussia.  If you look at the link for Groß Loßburg at Meyersgaz.org you will see Groß Loßburg in the center, Waldau to the right and Zempleburg just off the left edge.

This is a Theory of his family taking all that is within the birth range of his wife estimated as 1853-1873 (20 years).

  1. August Koberstein b. 1840 + Marie Bertha Mathilde
    1. Maria Augusta b. 1853 (known daughter
    2. H. Karl b. 1857 (NE)
    3. Emil Max b. 1860 (known son)
    4. Carl August b. 1868 (NY) also connect to Czarnikow Koberstein family which may exclude him from this theory.
    5. Otto b. 1873 (known son)

The Andreas family theory is way too early (1769/1789) and must be ancestral.
Berthold b. 1829 is way too early and may be a brother to August.
August Gustav b. 1840 (ND) is too early and may be a brother to August.
Paul Albert Richard Koberstein b. 1878 is clearly a descendant.

This FamilySearch decendancy is the most recent construction of this August Gustav Koberstein family.

H. Karl Koberstein (NE - 1857)

H. Karl Koberstein is the root individual whose family appears to be from Landsberg.  His first wife is given as Minnie Mary Fricka.  If we estimate his birth year as 20 years before his first child we get 1857
Also Frank William Koberstein, , the third child of Heinrich William Koberstein, born  5 Jul 1877 at Landsberg as his WWII draft registration card gives his birth place as Landsburg (notice slight spelling error).  He was 64 at the time but it seems he would remember his birth place which was probably repeated by him and his parents many times, even at age 64.).  All other earlier family members are indicated just as being born in Germany.  However on one brother to Frank William by the name of Bert H. Koberstein has listed the birthplace of Hamburg.  The source for this is his WWII draft registration card, he was 63.   Martha Koberstein who was born in Waldau, Flatow West Prussia just north of Landsberg.  This source is an actual birth record.  She is the daughter of Heinrich William Koberstein and Amelia Augusta Würfel.  Their children as follows with birth locations:

1 John Carl Albert Koberstein 1872 Only listed as born in Germany
2 Anna Liza Koberstein  1876  Only listed as born in Germany
3 Frank William Koberstein 1877 Landsberg an der Warthe (source
4 Bert H. Koberstein 1878 Listed as born in Hamburg (source)
5 William Henry 1880  Only listed as born in Germany
6 Martha A. Koberstein 1881  Listed as living in Waldau, Flatow, West Prussia (source)
7 Emma Amelia Koberstein 1883 born in Illinois their first place of residence
8 Mary M. Koberstein 1884 born in Nebraska
9 Millie M. Koberstein 1886 born in Nebraska
10 Otto Henry Koberstein 1886 born in Nebraska
11 Ida August Koberstein 1887 born in Nebraska
12 Herman Koberstein 1889 born in Nebraska

From this you might guess that they immigrated from Waldau since that is the last child born in Prussia.  The father Heinrich William Koberstein had both his naturalization paper and their passenger list stating they arrived in 1872.

Here is the contents of the passenger list:

William Henry Koberstein

These is the same sources for Frank William Koberstein, Henry Koberstein and Ernest Wilhelm Koberstein.  These ancestry sources have not document images.
The Naturalization paper is for Adams county Nebraska so seems like the right person.  Adams County is where they lived.  Adams County is the location of the 1900 and 1910 census.  It is hard to believe they arrived in 1872 at the birth of their first child in Germany and then five (5) more were born in Germany.   The 1900 Census for Henry and Millie Koberstine gives his arrival year as 1883 with 17 years in the United States and he (Pa) had submitted his naturalization papers.  The 1900 census shows these children still at home, Henry, Millie, William and Martha were born in Germany.   The 1910 census shows 1882 only a year different which could be accounted for by the month the census was taken.  The 1920 census gives 1886, memory is worse the farther from the event.  Something is wrong.  This census record suggests the naturalization and passenger lists may not be for these people.

H. Karl Koberstein’ second wife was C. Taech.  From this union came  Ernst Wilhelm Koberstein born June1, 1851 at Berlin-Mitte, Mitte, Berlin, Germany ( this is documented by find-a-grave but no primary source) and immigrated to Nebraska.  His wife Paulina Antonia Hoffmann (no clear sources for this) was also stated as born in Landsberg.  Their children are as follows:

1 Richard Koberstein 1872  born in Nebraska
2 Bertha Koberstein 1878 born in Nebraska
3 Elisha Koberstein 1880  born in Nebraska
4 Hermann Wilhelm Koberstein 1888 born in Nebraska
5 Anna Koberstein 1890 born in Nebraska
6 Friedrich H. Koberstein 1891 born in Nebraska
7 Otto Gustav August Koberstein 1883 born in Nebraska
8 Ernest Henry Koberstein 1897 born in Nebraska
9 Pauline A. Koberstein 1900 born in Nebraska
10 Elizabeth Koberstei ? born in Nebraska

Carl August Koberstein (NY 1868)

Carl August Koberstein born 5 May 1868 at Landsberg.  This family immigrated to Buffalo New York.  AQ line.  This line has now been connected via Ewald Koberstein to the Matys Koberstein line of Czarnikow.  Here is the ship manifest when they immigrated which said step-sister, Hulde Gilsdorf, was from Raumerswalde very near Költschen and near Landsburg an der Warthe.
August Koberstein (Born in Koltschen) father of Leather factory owner Otto Max Koberstein is connected to Christoph of Colonie Brinsk.

Father - Paul Albert Richard Koberstein )1878
Richard Adolf Hans Koberstein (1898)

Ruthie Singleton has indicated her Grandfather Hans Koberstein may have been born in the Gorzow Wielkopolski area (formerly Landsberg and der Warthe).  Hans Koberstein was born on 10 Aug 1898 and died 11 Nov 1972.  He married Ansorge Wendrich.  She was born in 1895 and died 1932.  Her notes for Hans states, “Hans passed away in 1972.  I know my Grandfather remarried, but I don't have that information.  My Grandfather's name is Hans Koberstein his DOF is Aug. 10, 1898, he passed away on Nov 11 or 12, 1972.  He was born in Germany as well.  All I know is that he had 2 or 3 sisters, that is all we know.  My Grandfather was put in a prison camp in WWII around Feb 21, 1945 and got out around 1950.  My Uncle was put in a prison camp in Italy around the same time.  I don't know if it was my Uncle Hans or Kurt.  He remarried around 1945 when my mother and Step Grandmother was told to leave from their homes in East Germany and go West, this is all I know right now.”
The Ancestry Eastern Provinces Database confirms this data for Richard Adolf Hans Koberstein born on 10 Aug 1898 at and married to Selma Ansorge on 25 Dec 1925 at Grunau, Kries Hirschberg, Prussia.  I guess the last name Wendrich must be a first marriage.  Hans birth is confirmed as 10 Aug 1898 at Sorau, N. L. (I believe that is Sorau 1 NdLausitz which is Sorau, Frankfurt, Brandenburg, Preussen).  His wife has the birth date of 9 Mar 1898 at Hirschberg in Schlesien.
Here is the Family Tree on Ancestry.

More information on children is give on Ancestry.
Ancestry also had the birth certificate on 10 Aug 1898 at Sorau Stadt, Kreis Sorau for Hans with his parents, Paul Albert Richard Koberstein and Anna Martha Maria Berchner.  This contradicts Ruthie Singleton’s thought that he was born in Gorzow Wielkopolski area (formerly Landsberg and der Warthe), however Sorau is not far away.
It also adds another child to these parents: Richard Kurt Koberstein married Frieda Marie Luise Büttner on 11 Jul 1918 at Soldin, Prussia.  He was born on 8 Jun 1893.

Marie Louise Minna Koberstein (Landsberg 1897)

The Main Turk Database:
Otto Hermann Ernst Türk was born on 23 Mar 1875 in Friedeberg. He married Marie Louise Minna Koberstein on 13 Feb 1897 in Landsberg an der Warthe.  (Otto Hermann Ernst Türk 1. Marriage Record, Archives in Gorzow Wielkopolski).

They had the following children:  Paul Türk (M) was born on 14 Dec 1897 in Landsberg an der Warthe, Brandenburg, DEU. He died on 20 Jan 1898 in Landsberg an der Warthe, Brandenburg, DEU.

The lower part of these maps (Meekow area) covers the old areas of oststernberg.

Here are a couple of years of Landsberg address books with the Koberstein names extracted, including a partial map of Landsburg and photos/postcards of buildings of Landsburg.

These are root individuals for Landsburg:

August started a leather works which became a factory under his son Max.  Here is picture of an ammo case and rifle sling made at this factory.

Here are extracts from the Landsberg an der Warthe three volume set about this family

Erich Joachim Koberstein married to Hildegard Emmi Tehner.
In addition see the family theories section to see a suggested connection for these Landsburg individuals that all intersect in Nebraska, USA which includes:

Ernst Wilhelm Koberstein  born June 1, 1851 in Lan(d)sburg, (son of H. Karl Koberstein) married to Paulina Antonia Huffman.

Bertha Koberstein  (There is a direct connection to Landsburg through here sister Marie Auguste who immigrated from  Koeffschen/Sternberg  (see the Bandenburg emmigration index) with her husband Ferdinand Rissmann.  Also an autograph book with references to Landsburg in it are referenced by descendants.

Frank William Koberstein (No known connection to Landsburg other than the possible connection to others in this theory through Nebraska. In fact his obituary indicates he was born 50 miles north of Berlin which may eliminate Landsburg as his birthplace)

Andreas Koberstein born 1789, son of Christoph, married Frau Wiedner.  He had a daughter,  Friederike who was born about 1802 in Bärwalde, Neumark, Prussia, which is part of Kries Landsburg.

Additional fruitless Research

In an effort to find any additional Koberstein's in the Landsberg area, I searched some of the microfilms available at the LDS Family History Library, December 2, 2005 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Here are the results:
