Feilding, New Zealand and citys round about found Frederick Wilhelm Koberstein Sr. and his descendents mentioned frequently in the local newspaper.
Here is a link with some of the early history of Feilding prior to Koberstein being found in the local newspaper, Feilding Star
by SAM KILMISTER Last updated 9:10, January 24 2018
William Carthew, who served as mayor of Feilding and opened the town's first bookshop, arrived in 1879.
Immigrants flooded Feilding by the shipload in the 1880s and brought their skills and trades in the hope of a better future. While some thrived, others were not so lucky ,going bankrupt in less than a couple of years. Among them was William Westcombe Corpe, who would become the town's first international exporter. It was big news for a community that considered trading across international borders before the 1900s a pipe dream.
Adsett Sawmill, Colyton, pictured in 1890, was one of 28 operating in the district.
Corpe, a dairy farmer, established the Makino Butter Factory in 1883. The factory was the first in the lower North Island and was supplied with milk by settlers from around the region. After taking samples of his butter to England in 1887, he began exports to England and Sydney. Its success was an immense relief for small farmers in Manawatū, according to the Feilding Star. Less than five years later, Corpe opened creameries in Feilding, near Halcombe, and in the Sydney suburb of Campbelltown.
The Makino Butter factory in 1888, Feilding's first international exporter.
He decided in 1894 to convert his Makino and Halcombe factories to cheese plants, but opened two more creameries to fill the void. By the early 1900s, he had five dairy factories exporting to England and Australia. Trade wasn't so favourable for Charles Dahl, who came to Feilding from Denmark in 1878. His general store – The Campbelltown Store – opened in 1881, but he declared bankruptcy two years later, closing in 1884. Records show an unnamed Irish shoemaker was also given a wake-up call after falling in love with a Māori woman, according to Feilding and Districts' Historical Society member Felicity Logan.
Charles Dahl opened the Campbelltown Store in 1881, but declared bankruptcy in 1883 and closed the store in 1884.
The shoemaker mended boots for farmers and tradesmen clearing the bush at Manchester Block.
The described the Māori woman as a "swate craythur", Irish for "pretty creature". He vowed to marry her and "go live with the savages", Logan said."The intention changed when his fellows questioned him," Logan said. "Since the natives didn't wear boots, would this benefit his trade?"
The Feilding Hotel in 1875.
Some immigrants, such as Frederick and Maria Towler, were given false information before leaving England. The family believed they could lease 100 acres at £3 an acre, with five years to pay. However, Manchester Block agent Follet Halcombe told the family on their arrival that land was £10 an acre, to be paid within three years. This placed considerable stress on Maria Towler, who was pregnant. Her son Walter would become the first European child born in Feilding. He was christened by the first preaching Anglican minister and given a quarter acre of land by the town's founder Colonel William Feilding. Walter Towler died in 1949, aged 75, but is still remembered be some Feilding residents, Logan said. Not long after Walter's birth, Colonel Feilding returned to the area for the first time since buying Manchester Block. Among the swamp, mud, flax and fallen logs stood scattered cottages and a town starting to develop. Mr TV Brown built the Feilding Hotel in 1875, the town's first licensed hotel. Before then, patrons had to walk or ride the thirst-provoking distance to Awahuri if they wanted alcohol. By 1880, it was run by James Hastie and it was renamed Hastie's Hotel. After Hastie's death, his wife Martha ran the hotel for several years. The hotel was badly damaged in 1909 and 1910 by fires. In the first fire, fireman Douglas Williamson died. William Carthew, who served as mayor of Feilding and opened the town's first bookshop, was startled to find no fire brigade when he arrived in 1879. He saw "only a few shops, a railway staffed by two men and a post office staffed by one man and a boy". He feared that bush close to the town centre posed a significant fire risk. In the meantime, 28 sawmills provided most of the town's employment opportunities. This worried one of the town's first store owners, Mr Loudon, who owned a drapery and clothing shop. Loudon was convinced the town would die once all the district's timber was felled and quit the town. However, Feilding kicked on. The Money Order and Savings Bank opened in 1877, also becoming a telegraph office. The first newspaper, the Feilding Guardian, started in 1879 and was printed twice a week with the blessing of Halcombe, although a year later he complained of its "persistently low tone". About that time the town's CBD underwent its first kerbing and metalling in Fergusson St, creating footpaths.
A very interesting series of facts are uncovered by online copies of the Feiding Star Newspaper from 01-01-1882 to 01-01-1920. I have summarized some of the more interesting facts, but there are many more. A number of these articles talk about school and Primer or Standard levels. I looked up this chart that gives current levels in New Zealand schools.
Per the military records for his son Geoge Albert Koberstein his next of kin, his father lived at Taonui, Feilding, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand on 1 March 1893. Taonui is a street in Feilding, even to this day, that connects to the city square.

Meeting of Settler at Campbelltown.
[From Our Own correspondent.]
A very important meeting was held in the Temperance Hall, Campbelltown, last evening, to consider the advisability of petitioning the Minister of Lands to acquire the Carnarvon Estate so that it may be cut up into small farms. The hall was well filled, and Mr Ransom was elected to the chair. In his remarks, the chairman stated that he had been requested by many of the settlers to have a meeting of this king to see what could be done relative to the Government purchasing the Estate. He stated that there were about 7000 acres in the estate, and if it were cut up into farms it would tend greatly to the country being more closely settled. Several gentlemane spoke in favor of the scheme, and after it had been well discussed, Mr. Glover proposed and Mr. Knight seconded, That a petition be drawn up to ask the Minister of Lands to acquire the Carnarvon Estate for a small run-holdings. A committee, consisting of Messrs Glover, Knight, Koberstein, and Anderson, was appointed to see to the drawing up of the same. The petition is to be left at the post office for a week, where everyone who is desirous of the estate being secured may sign. The above is creating great interest here, for if the estate is purchased it will be a great boom to Campbelltown. the large number of settlers present at the meeting last night may be considered a good criterion of the interest being taken in this matter.
Editors note: The only Campbelltown I can find in New Zealand is the former name of the town of bluff and the south most end of the south island of New Zealand. That seems to far away to be talked about in the Feilding Star newspaper in Feilding NZ in the north island near Palmerston North. It must hae been an area near Feilding that took the former name of Bluff, as maybe they immigrated into New Zealand via that city and it's Govenor mandated the change to Bluff, perhaps making it suitable to them.

Death of Mr. F.W. koberstein
Mr. Frederick Willimam Koberstein, of Rongotea, died at his home yesterday, at the age of 94 years. Arriving in the district in 1876, he was one of the pioneers of the district, and literally carved his home out of the bush. He was a good citizen, and had the respect of all his neighbors. Of a strong constitution, he had never known what sickness was, and it was only three day before his death with old age telling its tale that he was confined to his bed, and he peacefully pssed away yesterday full of years an dhonours. He leaves a family of five sons and one daughter. The sons are: Augustus (Taikorea), William (Colyton), Amco (patea), Carl (Queensland), Fred (Wellington), and Watta (Shannon); and the daughter, Mrs C. Hartley (Wellington).

Manawatu City Council. Monthly Meeting. ...
The Chairman said it was understood Mr. Koberstien was giving the land free.
Mr. Graham said that was a mistake. Similar clams by Mr. Hopping and Mr. Sanson had been settled by the Council. Mr. Koberstein had paid L27 10s per acre for this land. It was a small matter and Mr. Koberstein thought it was better for the Council to settle it without the expense of legal proceedings. He held that Mr. Koberstien was entitled to the value of the land, less some slight betterment, which was only a small item.
Unpon consideration Mr. Koberstein offered to accept L52. After about an hour's discussion, Mr. Gray proposed that an offer of L32 10s be make to Mr. Koberstein, providing he is not asked to move the fence.
The Motion was carried.
Mr. Koberstein said he would not accept the offer. ...

Dairying. The Colyton Factory
A meeting of the settlers of the Colyton district was held in the local hall on Saturday night, to consider the question of forming a co-operative company to take over the factory owned by Mr. Gillies. Only a small number of dairymen turned up to the meeting. Mr. J.J. Murphy was voted to the chair, and expressed his regret that more of the settlers were not present. The factory was most convenient for them at the present time, and if a stranger got hold of it the settlers might get into t much worse position. He was sorry Mr. Gillies found it necessary to leave the district.
Mr. Gillies siad failing health compelled him to dispose of the factory. He wished to give the supplier the first opportunity of buying the factory. He said they could have the whole factory, with two acres freehold, as a going concern, for L1250. He would welcome inspection.
The chairman said there was a suficient number of daiymen in the immediate neighbourhood to take over factory and make it very payable proposition, if they ran it as it should be.
The answer to a question, Mr. Gillies said he had manufactured 63 tons of butter last year. He would be willing to take L600 cash and the balance to remain for three or five years at 6 per cent.
The Chairman proposed that Messrs Waldon, Koberstein and Laing inspect the factory, interview all the supplier, and call another meeting to report and to consider the matter of taking over the factory.
Mr. Koberstein recorded the motion, which was agreed to.
